Nature has gifted us lots of miracles. The eucalyptus tree is one such wonder that offers lots of medicinal properties to mankind.

Eucalyptus is a tree. The dried leaves and oil are used to make medicine. Eucalyptus oil comes from the dried leaves of the eucalyptus tree. The oil is a colourless liquid with a strong woody and sweet scent. Eucalyptus leaves are steam-distilled to extract the oil. Eucalyptus oil contains 70-85% 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) – an ingredient in some mouthwash and dental preparations.

Though eucalyptus is used medicinally for many purposes.

Eucalyptus leaf is used for infections, fever, upset stomach, and to help loosen coughs. The leaf is also used for treating respiratory tract infections, whooping cough, asthma, pulmonary tuberculosis, osteoarthritis, joint pain (rheumatism), acne, wounds, poorly healing ulcers, burns, bacterial dysentery, ringworms, liver and gallbladder problems, loss of appetite, and cancer.

Eucalyptus oil should not be taken by mouth or applied to the skin full-strength. It must be diluted for safety. The diluted oil is taken by mouth for pain and swelling (inflammation) of respiratory tract mucous membranes, coughs, bronchitis, sinus pain and inflammation, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and respiratory infections.

It is also used as an expectorant to loosen coughs, antiseptic, fever reducer, and in vaporizer fluids. Other uses include treatment of wounds, burns, ulcers, and cancer.

Diluted eucalyptus oil is applied directly to the skin for pain and swelling of respiratory tract mucous membranes, joint pain, genital herpes, and nasal stuffiness. It is also used as an insect repellent.

The oil has multiple different uses –
Eucalyptus oil also has flavouring, pharmaceutical, and antiseptic uses.

Eucalyptus oil may also have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties – people use eucalyptus oil to help treat a wide range of medical conditions.

It is used to help relieve symptoms of the common cold and is found in many cough lozenges and inhalants.

Eucalyptus oil vapour acts as a decongestant when it is inhaled and is used to treat bronchitis.

Eucalyptus oil was used in traditional Aboriginal medicines for treating fungal infections and skin wounds. Eucalyptus tea was also administered to reduce fevers.

Towards the end of the 19th century, eucalyptus oil was used in most hospitals in England to clean urinary catheters.

It is also an effective insect repellent. In 1948, the U.S. officially registered eucalyptus oil as an insecticide and miticide (kills mites and ticks).

Medicinal uses and health benefits of eucalyptus

Antibacterial properties -One study found that eucalyptus oil may have antibacterial effects on pathogenic bacteria in the upper respiratory tract.

Relieving pain – there is research to indicate that eucalyptus oil has analgesic properties. One study concluded that Eucalyptamint produced significant physiologic responses that may be beneficial for pain relief and/or useful to athletes as a passive form of warm-up.

Promoting good dental health -eucalyptus has antibacterial activity against cariogenic (causing tooth decay) and periodontopathic bacteria. The use of eucalyptus extract chewing gum may promote periodontal health, according to a study published in the Journal of Periodontology which examined the effect of chewing-gum containing eucalyptus extract on periodontal health.

Stimulating immune system response – eucalyptus oil extract is able to implement the innate cell-mediated immune response.

Other possible conditions that eucalyptus can treat include:

Arthritis

A stuffed nose

Wounds and burns

Acne

Ulcers

Bladder diseases

Diabetes

Fever

Flu

Precautions and side effects

It is unsafe to take eucalyptus oil orally or when it’s applied on the skin before being diluted.
Side effects may include:

Diarrhoea

Nausea

Vomiting

Stomach upset

Signs of eucalyptus poisoning:

Dizziness

Feelings of suffocation

Small pupils

Losing weight is all about consuming less calories & burning more. It is important to know the calorie content of your daily food item so that you may check you daily calories & nutrition intake and can keep control over your body weight. If you consume the food with less calories & more nutritional value you will definitely end up in losing weight without harming your body.

If you want to lose weight, the first advise that someone will give you is to limit your calories. While we know that processed foods and junk foods pack a lot of calories and should be consumed less, what about every day food items like rice, bread, the biscuits that accompany your evening cup of tea or even a chapati? If this has got you thinking, fret not as we deconstruct the calorie intake for the most common foods items that we consume almost on a daily basis. I have divided the portions, considering the amount you eat may not be more than a bowl or one serving in a day .

1. 1 bowl of cooked rice:

1 bowl of cooked rice has about 136 calories and a plateful of cooked rice has 272 calories which is about 80 grams a plate.

2. 1 chapatti and 1 parantha:

1 medium chapatti made with 20 grams of atta (whole wheat atta) has about 70 calories, while 1 large chapatti made with 30 grams of atta will have about 100 calories. On the other hand, 1 large plain parantha made with 30 grams of atta had about 121 calories and a portion of stuffed aloo parantha will be 210 calories.

3. 1 bowl of sooji ka halwa:

1 small bowl of sooji ka halwa is approximately 379 calories! This is because the halwa includes lots of pure desi ghee and sugar.

4. 1 samosa:

1 medium-sized aloo ka samosa has about 123 calories. This has added potatoes and is deep fried in refined oil.

5. 1 serving of French fries:

130 grams of French fries that is one serving will have about 427 calories, if they are fried. If you are baking them, the same amount will be less than 200 calories.

6. 1 cup of tea:

1 cup of tea with 30 millilitres (ml) of milk and two teaspoons of sugar is about 37 calories. The calorie intake of tea increases with the increase in the amount of sugar and milk.

7. 1 cup of coffee:

1 cup of coffee will be 150 calories for the same amount of milk and sugar as tea.

8. 1 bowl of Namkeen:

1 bowl of Namkeen (Bhujia) may have about 550 to 600 calories. So, watch out!

9. 1 bowl of cooked dal:

1 bowl of cooked moong dal, say about 30 grams of dal, would be around 104 calories. The calories in other dals may slightly vary.

10. 3 non-creamy and creamy biscuits (along with tea):

1 creamy biscuit is about 160 calories and 1 non-creamy biscuit is about 100 calories. For three creamy biscuits, it will be a whopping 480 calories that you consume and for three non-creamy biscuits you would be adding about 300 calories to your day.

11. 1 Poori:

1 medium atta poori fried in 10 grams of oil is about 125 calories. If you have three medium pooris, you may be consuming about 375 calories; still less than having three creamy biscuits!

If you have any questions regarding Weight Loss or Calorie content of regular food that we eat please write to me.

It is very difficult to measure the exact calories that an individual consumes during each meal. Knowing about your calorie intake becomes even more important if you are aiming to lose weight & feel energetic throughout the day.

Some Nutritionists suggests eating 3 times a day while few of them advises taking 5 meals in a day.

How many times you eat depends largely upon your daily physical work out. If you are leading a sedentary lifestyle which results into less calorie burning throughout the day then you may opt to eat 3 times in a day as on the other hand if you work out heavily or leading a very active lifestyle you may opt to eat 5 times in a day.

Apart from knowing how much you should eat in a day, it is also equally important to know the calorie in each meal.

“The total calorie intake for an average man and woman in a day is 2100 calories and 1900 calories respectively. This has been prescribed by the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN).”

When you consume a meal, you don’t really measure the number of calories that go into it. It is imperative for the ones who are looking to shed those extra kilos through cutting down on their diet. Some prefer spreading their calorie intake across three meals a day, while others like to spread it across five meals a day, which may include snacking in the morning and evening. But do you know how many calories should really go into each meal of the day? Or how should you ideally divide it to fulfil the day’s requirement? We have unlocked all the answers for you that might help you to decide the number of calories you must eat in a day.

Eating in parts or distributing your calorie intake will result in better digestion system & improved metabolic rate. A better digestion system and metabolic rate will help in burning more calories resulting in weight loss.

The total calorie intake for an average man and woman in a day is 2100 calories and 1900 calories

Ideally, a diet plan should be spread across the whole day and not just three meals; that is breakfast, lunch and dinner, as we tend to eat more, considering the huge gaps between the three meals. It is a general tendency to eat more after a gap of at least 4-5 hours. This might lead to poor digestion, bloating and other stomach issues. Therefore, it is imperative to nibble on something in between your main meals so you don’t overeat.

Most experts recommend five meals a day that may include light snacking. It is easy to divide the calories in five meals.

I strongly recommend dividing equal portion of calorie intake of the three main meals that is breakfast, lunch and dinner. For the three main meals, it would be two-fifth of the total calories you consume. For the snacks in the morning and evening, it should be one-fifth of the total calories you consume.

Breakfast: You must start your day with the right mix of nutrition, calories and protein to keep you going for the entire day. For a woman, 1900 calories are recommended, then 400-450 calories should be eaten in 4-5 parts. While, for a man, if 2100 calories are recommended, 450-550 then calories should be eaten in 4-5 parts.

Mid Snacking: Most of us miss this but it is important for you to have a light snack between breakfast & lunch. Fruits, low-fat milk, buttermilk etc. are good options for mid snacking. For a woman, total calorie intake should be 200-250 calories, while for a man, it should be 250-300 calories.

Lunch: Vegetables, Curd, Dal, Salad, Roasted Chicken or Fish are ideal combinations for a perfect Lunch. Limit your Roti or Rice intake during Lunch as they contain high calories & takes time to digest. For a woman, 500-550 calories are recommended and for a man, it should be 550-600 calories during lunch meal.

Evening Snacks: A light snack 2-3 hours before the dinner will satiate your hunger & will help you to take light dinner. Green Tea, Vegetable Cheela, Chana Chat are few of the good combinations for Evening snacks. For women, total calories in Evening snack should be 150–200 calories and for men, it should be 200-250 calories.

Dinner: You may eat the same food items in Dinner that you normally have during Lunch but restrict the quantity & prepare it in a manner that its nutritional value should remain intact. For women, 400-450 calories is recommended and for men, it should be 550-600 calories.

If your target is to lose weight then avoid fried, sugary, bakery items, cold drink in any of your meals not only these food contains high calorie but they have very less or no nutritional value.

Unfortunately, there is no Calorimeter available in the market that may calculate the total calories of our food. We have to be wise & sensible enough to understand the calorie content of each & every food.

Conclusion: So to lose weight & feel energetic through out the day distribute your calories. You can alter your calorie intake accordingly, but divide it in the same way as it is given above. So, even if you are dieting, it would be easy to modify your diet accordingly without having to worry about excess calories.

Hope this article might have helped you in knowing the distribution pattern of calories of all of your meals in a day.

Do you have any question regarding Weight Loss or how to distribute your total calorie intake in a day, please write to me.
